There are now two Rhode Islanders who serve in President-Elect Donald Trump’s small circle of advisors. Sean Spicer joins Middletown native Mike Flynn, who serves at Trump’s National Security Advisor in a critical White House role.

Spicer, a Barrington native, is a graduate of Portsmouth Abbey and his mother is an administrator at Brown University’s East Asian Studies program.

Spicer is now the White House Press Secretary for the Trump White House.

De facto, in this position he helps direct the messaging and communication for the leader of the free world.

Previous White House Press Secretaries have included Bill Moyers (Lyndon Johnson), James Brady (Ronald Reagan - who was wounded in an attempt to kill the President), and George Stephanopoulos (Bill Clinton).

Long-time Portsmouth Abbey faculty member Cliff Hobbins tells GoLocal that Spicer was a remarkably talented student and “so interested and accomplished in studying history and government.”

Hobbins said that he helped Spicer secure his first job in politics. It was an internship for Senate Democratic leader George Mitchell (D-ME) in Washington.

Efforts to reach former Senator George Mitchell were unsuccessful.
