VIDEO: Foulkes Endorsed by Elorza

While Nellie Gorbea and Dan McKee have been lining up endorsements, fellow Democratic candidate for governor Helena Foulkes has had to sit and watch, until Thursday.

At a press conference in Providence, Foulkes rolled out the endorsement from outgoing Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza as well as Senate Majority Whip Maryellen Goodwin and former State Representative Joe Almeida — now a candidate for state senate.

“Rhode Islanders know we need a leader who is genuine and has the willingness to get things done for the people of this state. That’s Helena Buonanno Foulkes,” said Elorza. “As Mayor of Providence, I have seen first-hand how effective leadership at the State level can deliver for our residents who need it most. It’s time to elect Helena as governor and get big things done for Rhode Island.”

Elorza, when he was considering a run for governor, initiated a near physical altercation with McKee in July of 2021.

"I'm honored to endorse our next governor, Helena Buonanno Foulkes," said Goodwin. "Helena's compassion, deep understanding of the issues facing Rhode Island, intelligence and leadership skills are simply unparalleled. There is no one more qualified or more prepared to serve the people of Rhode Island as governor." 

Earlier this week, McKee landed the endorsement of the two most powerful unions in the state -- the AFL-CIO and the NEA.

Former U.S. Congressman Patrick Kennedy was on hand at the announcement at the Southside Cultural Center on Broad Street on Thursday and spoke in support of Foulkes' candidacy as well.
