Wallin to Kilmartin: Why the Hidden Donations?

Republican candidate for Attorney General Erik Wallin yesterday questioned why Democrat Peter Kilmartin had accepted over $81,000 in anonymous donations over the last eight years.

“The fact that Representative Kilmartin over the last eight years has classified over $81,000 in donations as ‘aggregate’ raises the very serious question: Why is it hidden?” Wallin said. “While it is not illegal to classify contributions of $100 or less in the aggregate, in the first quarter of 2004, he classified over $17,000 that way - and in the first quarter of 2007 it was over $20,000. Such high amounts makes one ask what is being hidden,” Wallin said.

Wallin continued: “Since announcing his candidacy for Attorney General in February 2010, Representative Kilmartin has classified over $5,000 this way. And since 2009, about $15,700 is classified that way. A candidate for Attorney General of the state should be willing to reveal who contributed - and if that many donors are requesting anonymity, then Rhode Islanders, me included, are going to ask why.”

Kilmartin spokesman Brett Broesder responded: “Peter Kilmartin is proud of the tremendous amount of grassroots support he has received as a public servant – most of which has come from his friends, neighbors and law enforcement,” Broesder said. “Perhaps Erik Wallin, who lost his only other run for public office, isn’t aware of the spirit of the law surrounding campaign finance in Rhode Island.”
