#21 URI Edges #24 Cincinnati 76-71, Faces #1 Duke on Sunday

The #21 URI Rams will face the number one team in the country on Sunday afternoon after defeating #24 Cincinnati 76-71 on Saturday afternoon in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament Semifinals at Mohegan Sun.

The game against Duke can be seen on ESPN with tip-off set for 1 p.m.

With the win over Cincinnati, URI moves to 4-0 on the season, Cincinnati drops to 2-1 overall. 

Matthews Seals it

URI led by two points, 71-69, with 24 seconds left in the game and had an inbounds pass under the Cincinnati basket with six seconds left on the shot clock. 

The ball was inbounded by Stanford Robinson to a wide open E.C. Matthews who rose up and hit a three right in front of the Rams bench to give them a 74-69 lead and seal a victory. 

"We had a money player come free and do what he does," said Hurley after the game. 

That three would cap off a URI come back after they trailed, 46-35, early in the second half. 

The Comeback

Down 11, the Rams would go on a 12-0 run capped off by a Cyril Langevine layup to take a 47-46 lead, their first lead of the game, with 14:42 to play. 

After the lead went back and forth, the Bearcats would jump ahead 54-49, but again the Rams would fight back. This time they would use an 8-2 run to take a 58-56 after two free throws from Kuran Iverson. 

Two free throws by Christian Thompson would give the Rams the lead for good, 60-58. 

URI's Slow Start 

The Rams fell behind by as much as 12 at numerous points of first half, only making one shot from the floor in about the first five minutes of action. 

The Rams were 2 of 12 from three and 12 of 31 overall from the floor in the first half. The rams were 0 for 12 to start the game for threes. The big problems for the Rams was constant foul trouble by Hassan Martin. 

The Rams closed to within five points, 36-31, before Cincinnati's Kyle Washington hit a three as time expired. 

The Bearcats would take a 39-31 lead into the locker room. 

Garrett Goes Down

Late in the first half, URI guard Jarvis Garrett went down under the URI basket with a neck injury and was taken off on a stretcher. 

Leading the Way 

Matthews led the Rams with 18 points on 5 of 17 shooting from the field, including 4 of 9 from beyond the arc. 

Kuran Iverson had the best game of his season so far, posting a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. He also dished out four assists.
