#21 URI Upset by Valparaiso 65-62

Technical foul on Dan Hurley costs URI
In their first true road game of the season, the #21 URI Rams fell 65-62 to the Valparaiso Crusaders on Tuesday night in Indiana. The Crusaders beat a ranked team for the first time in 18 years. 

URI drops to 5-2 overall while Valparaiso improves to 7-1 on the season.

The Rams trailed 65-62 with ten seconds left, needing a three to tie the game or a quick layup and they got neither.

Jarvis Garrett took the ball up the court and had an opportunity for a seemingly wide open layup, but did not take it, instead, he ran out behind the three-point line to launch a desperation three but the shot was blocked, sealing the Valparaiso win. 

Just seconds before that, Hassan Martin was at the free throw line for a one and one with the Rams trailing 64-62, however, Martin missed the front end of it. 

Valparaiso would hit one of their two free throws on their ensuing possession to give them the winning margin, 65-62. 

Costly Technical Foul 

Nicola Akele converted a layup to pull the Rams within one point, 39-38, with 13:58 left to play. 

Following a foul call on URI’s Jared Terrell, URI head coach Dan Hurley was called for a technical foul after nearly running out o the middle of the court to express his unhappiness with the call. 

Valparaiso converted both free throws to give the Crusaders a 41-38 lead with 13:50 to play. The Crusaders would add another basket to give them their largest lead of the game 43-38 with 13:08 to play. 

URI would cut their deficit to at 43-42 following a Hassan Martin layup before Valparaiso extended their lead to as much as 50-42 with 8:55 left to play. 

The Leaders 

Jared Terrell led the Rams with 21 points in the game, while Martin followed up with 16 points and six rebounds. 

Next up 

The Rams return to action on Saturday, December 3 when they visit in-state rival Providence College at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. 

Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
