Brown Grad and Coaching Icon Joe Paterno is Dead

Joe Paterno graduated from Brown in 1950 and went on to be one of the most successful football coaches in the history of the sport. Paterno's life and his legacy were turned upside-down this year with the prosecution of his long-time assistant coach, alleged child molester. According to court records, Paterno was aware of claims against his assistant and did little or nothing to inform law enforcement.

Brown's Football Media Guide lists Joe Paterno on their celebrity spread. Paterno, known as JoePa, led Penn State Football from 1966 to the 2011 season when he was forced to resign as a result of the role he played in the Jerry Sandusky case.

He set major college football's record for most wins. His former players, almuni and the students and faculty widely admired Paterno until the Sandusky case came to light.

Paterno was 85 years old.
