Brown’s Lost Weekend in the Lost Season - Brown Notches Losses to Princeton and Penn

Brown men’s basketball team came into the weekend holding on to a glimmer of hope that a sweep at home against Princeton and Penn could keep their hopes of finishing in the top four in the Ivy League and thus a seed in the Ivy League tournament -- the winner of the tournament gets an automatic seed to the NCAA tournament. But into turned into another nightmare weekend for the Bears.

Brown came into the weekend 4-6 in the league.

With all-Ivy Tamenang Choh and defensive star, Jaylan Gainey returning coupled with a bastion of talented underclassmen the expectation was that the Bears would be a top-tier team. The season started with a near-upset of the University of North Carolina and then unraveled.

Now, the Bears have only a tiny chance to make the Ivy tournament.

Lost Weekend

Friday, Princeton blew out the Bears 69-50.

On Saturday Brown lost in the final second to Penn.

A three by Kino Lilly Jr. gave the Brown a one-point lead with five seconds remaining, but Penn would convert on the game-winner four seconds later to defeat the Bears 89-88 Saturday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

Jaylan Gainey set the screen and Tamenang Choh found Lilly for his career-high ninth assist as the freshman drained the long-range shot for his team-high 20th point of the night. But, the Quakers' Clark Slajchert's floater in the lane with .4 seconds on the clock gave Penn the win.

Lilly's 20 points led Brown. Dan Friday had one of his best nights of the season with 19 points and six rebounds. Choh had 15 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Kimo Ferrari tied his career-high of 12 points and at one point was 4-for-4 from three.

With the two losses this weekend Brown falls to 4-8 in the Ivys and 12-15 overall.

Brown will play its final home game of the season next Saturday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. against Columbia. And, closes the season on March 5 at Yale.
