Cambridge Scores Season-High 31 Points, Brown Edges Canisius 97-90 in OT

Desmond Cambridge scored a season-high 31 points to lead Brown to a win.
Desmond Cambridge poured in a season-high 31 points to lead the Brown Bears past Canisius 97-90 in overtime on Tuesday night.

The 31 points came on 11 of 19 shooting from the field and 7 of 13 shooting from three. 

They are two shy of Cambridge’s career-high of 33 points, which he scored last season against Marist.

Earlier this week, GoLocalProv named Cambridge one of the 19 to Watch in 2019.

The win improves Brown to 11-4 on the season with one game left before Ivy League play begins.

The 11 non-conference wins is a Brown's school record, which they set in their victory over Maine in their last game. 

The Bears have won 11 of their last 13 games. 

Canisius falls to 5-9 overall.

Brown Wins in OT

Trailing 86-84 in the opening seconds of the overtime period, the Bears would get back-to-back layups from Tamenang Choh and Obi Okolie to take an 88-86 lead with 3:24 left to play.

Brown would then score the next seven points, extending the run to 11-3, and giving them a 95-87 lead on a layup by Okoli with 27 seconds left in overtime.

Canisius would get back within five, 95-90, with 20 seconds to play, before Brown would seal the game on two free throws from Cambridge. 

"This was a really good win for us against a strong team on the road. After the first possession in overtime, we stayed together and separated ourselves with several defensive stops," said Brown head coach Mike Martin after the game. 

The Bears would take the 97-90 win. 

Choh finished the game with 18 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Okolie finished with 15 points.

The Bears as a team, were hot from the floor throughout the game, shooting 50% from the field and 40% from three.

Brown Forces OT

The Bears led by as much as ten, 73-63, with 7:31 to play in the half, before the Golden Griffins rallied to cut Brown’s lead to one, 79-78, with 2:44 to play in the game.

Brown would go back up by as much as four, 82-78, on a layup by Cambridge with 1:14 to go.

Canisius would then go on a 6-0 run to take an 84-82 lead on a three by Malik Johnson with 16 seconds left.

It was the Golden Griffins first lead since the opening minute of the half.

In Brown’s final possession of regulation, Choh converted a layup with two seconds remaining to tie the game at 84 and send it to OT.

Next Up

Brown returns to action on Monday, January 14 when they host Johnson & Wales at the Pizzitola Center.

It is Brown’s final game before Ivy League play begins.

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
