Cranston's Castelli, Shnapir tied for 5th at Olympics

Cranston's Marissa Castelli and her partner, Simon Shnapir, have had their first taste of Olympic competition.

And the result?  Not bad, but not quite medal quality...yet.

In the first ever Team Figure Skating compeition held at a Winter Olympics, following the pairs' skate Castelli and Shnapir find themselves in a tie for 5th place overall, out of 10 countries competing for the gold medal.

Teammate Jeremy Abbott skated the men's short program and finished 7th, with Castelli and Shnapir taking 5th in their portion of the competition...bringing the team total to the tie for 5th place overall.

Each team entered will have one representative in men’s singles, women’s singles, pairs and ice dancing.  Skaters perform one short program and one free skate each. The event will be cut down to five teams after all of the short programs are completed.

Competition continues Saturday with the Ice Dancing short program, ladies's short program and pairs' free skate.  The medals will be decided after Sunday's events, which will include men's and ladies' free skates, and the Ice Dancing free skate.  For the schedule of competition times, click here.  For the latest results, click here.
