Elmwood Little League Puts Call Out for Volunteers

The Elmood Little League — which offers youth baseball programs to children from some of Providence’s poorest communities — is experiencing a shortage of its most precious resource: volunteers. Currently in its 64th year of operation, the program is on the lookout for new volunteer coaches to help serve the more than 500 inner-city boys and girls who look to the program for healthy, positive outdoor recreation.

Spread across 7 different divisions, the need for coaches is across the board — from Tee-Ball (ages 5 & 6) to Instructional (ages 7 & 8), Minors (ages 8 to 10), Major Baseball / Softball (ages 9 to 12) and Senior Baseball / Softball (ages 13 to 16).

"Boys & girls from this side of the City appreciate the efforts of the volunteer coaches,” long-time coach and administrator Dave Talan notes. “I frequently have people, that I coached 20 or 30 years ago, contact me on Facebook, or come by in person, to tell me how much they appreciated their time with the Elmwood Little League."

Alums of the league include P.C. Basketball coach Ed Cooley, NFL running back Deon Anderson and current Cranston city mayor and gubernatorial hopeful Allan Fung.

To get involved, contact league administrator Dave Talan directly at 401-941-3662 or via email at [email protected], or stop by an indoor signup to talk to league officials. The next signups are Saturday, March 15 from 11 AM to 1 PM at the West End Recreation Center (109 Bucklin St.). Tryouts begin March 22, and all kids who take a swing at it get league placement and a chance to play each game.
