Finneran: A Thorough Whipping

That was some game last Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

The Patriots absolutely destroyed the Los Angeles Chargers. I wouldn’t be surprised if, upon arriving home in sunny California, all the Chargers checked into a trauma unit. They will also need mental health counseling for years to come. They were on the receiving end of a solid game plan and a total beating.

I know not what to expect this week when the Patriots travel to Kansas City for a showdown with the Chiefs. Arrowhead is a tough place to play and the Chiefs are a very good team………as were the Chargers until Sunday happened.

I do know this, however—two weeks ago it was fashionable to say that no one wanted to play the Colts or the Ravens. Now, after watching Tom Brady make mincemeat of the Chargers, NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WANTS TO PLAY THE PATRIOTS. Take that to the bank.

The regular season had its up and downs for sure. Brady skipping OTAs. Edelman suspended for four games. Gronkowski battling bumps and bruises. Back to back losses in games two and three to the crappy Jags and the equally crappy Lions. Two impressive back to back wins in Weeks six and seven against the Chiefs and the Bears. Two more back to back December losses against the Dolphins (!) and the Steelers. Ugh.

This was not a juggernaut rolling through the opposition.

But, it’s now playoff time. Cold weather does not register against the Patriots. It clearly bothers teams from warmer climes, maybe worth six to nine points in extreme conditions. But Sunday’s thrashing of the Chargers was not weather related. It was like watching Secretariat run against some nag from the Marshfield Fair. Good God, what a beating. I was bored after the Patriots’ fourth possession……..four possessions and four scores. If they had wanted to, the Patriots could have put up more points than the Golden State Warriors do on a nightly basis. Perhaps the NFL needs a mercy rule.

Two things caught my attention during the game. First, the Chargers seemed to make no adjustments whatsoever as Brady carved them up. This was the equivalent of very stupid World War I generals insisting on soldiers charging out of their trenches into entrenched machine gun fire. Slaughter then and slaughter now. You either adjust or you call the ambulances.

Second, when a great player is putting on a clinic, you might want to pay attention. Tom Brady was getting rid of the ball so fast that no pass rush could get to him. Now Phillip Rivers is a good quarterback, perhaps a little slow in getting rid of the ball, but nonetheless, he is a very good quarterback. We were also told time and again that his three primary receivers were bigger, stronger, and faster than the Patriots’ defensive backs. So tell me why Rivers didn’t copy the Patriots’ methods and throw quick short slants to his talented receivers?  If the Chargers had shown the slightest inclination to mimic the Patriots with short slants and quick crossing routes, Coach B. would have adjusted on the fly.

And that my friends is the difference between winning and losing. The Chargers are now at home, watching the games and licking their wounds. Coach B. and company get to play for at least one more week.

And remember this, NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WANTS TO PLAY THE PATRIOTS.
