Kenya Sweeps 121st Boston Marathon

Kenya has swept the 2017 Boston Marathon. 

On the men’s side Geoffrey Kirui won with a time of 2:09:37 while Edna Kiplagat won the women’s race with a time of 2:21:51. 

Kirui edged Portland, Oregon’s Galen Rupp who finished second with a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 58 seconds.

This is Kirui's first Boston Marathon title. 

Kiplagat beat out Bahrain's Rose Chelimo who finished second with a time of 2:33:51 and American Jordan Hasay, who finished with a time of 2:23:00. 

This was Kiplagat's first appearance at the Boston Marathon.

Jason Reilly of East Greenwich was Rhode Island’s top finisher. He finished with a time of 2:42:43 and in 223rd in the men’s race. 

Wheelchair Division 

In the Wheelchair division, it was a Switzerland sweep. 

Marcel Hug won his third straight title on the men’s side while Manuela Schar took the title on the women’s side. 

Hug set a new course record on Monday with a finish time of 1:18:04. He is a seven-time world champion and two-time paraolympic gold medalist. 

Schar finished with a time of 1:28:17, also a new course record.
