NEW: Patriots' Edelman Looks to Have Suffered Torn ACL, Out for Season

Julian Edelman is out for the season with a torn ACL
It looks as if New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has suffered a torn ACL during the Patriots preseason game on Friday night and is out for the season.

NFL.com reports, "NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Edelman suffered what is believed to be a torn ACL, according to sources informed of the injury. The receiver will have an MRI on Saturday to confirm the diagnosis."

The injury occurred during the Patriots first offensive possession of the game.  

Edelman made his third catch before his foot appeared to get caught in the turf while he was running up the field. 

He limped off the field on his own and then was carted to the locker room. 

What it Means for Patriots 

With Edelman out for the season, players such as Danny Amendola and Malcolm Mitchell will see increased roles in the offense. 

Running backs Rex Burkhead and James White will likely see an increased role in the passing game. 

Edelman With the Patriots 

Over his career with the Patriots, Edelman has recorded 425 catches for 4540 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Las season, Edelman hauled in 98 catches for 1106 yards and three touchdowns. He brought in 21 catches in the playoffs last season, helping the Patriots to their fifth Super Bowl Championship.

Edelman signed a two year contract with New England prior to this season.
