PC Falls to Wichita State 83-80 in Veterans Classic

Alpha Diallo had 27 points but it was not enough.
The Providence College Friars fell 83-80 to the Wichita State Shockers on Friday night in the Veterans Classic held at the Naval Academy.

"The better team won tonight. Hopefully, we can learn from this and move forward," said PC head coach Ed Cooley after the game.

The loss drops PC to 1-1 on the season, while Wichita State improves to 1-1.

Friars Fall to Wichita State

After trailing 44-39 at the half, the Friars cut Wichita State’s lead to one 44-43 following an Alpha Diallo lay-up with 19 minutes left in the game.

Wichita State would extend their lead to 47-43, before the Friars again would get within one, 49-48 when freshman A.J. Reeves knocked down a free throw to complete a three-point play with 16:56 to play in the game.

From that point, Wichita State went on a 10-1 run capped off by a Morris Udeze layup with 13:28 to play to take a 59-49 lead.

After Wichita State built up a 13 point lead, Providence climbed back within four, 76-72, with 3:16 to play after Diallo knocked down a three.

Diallo led the Friars with 27 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the field and 5 of 8 from three. However, he went 6 of 13 from the free throw line.

The Shockers would extend their lead to 80-72 and hold on to win 83-80.

The Friars were hurt by free throws in the game.

PC went to the line 26 times, but only knocked down 13 free throws.

By comparison, the Shockers knocked down 11 of 19 free throws.

Next Up 

PC returns to action on Tuesday, November 13 when they host Holy Cross. 

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
