URI and Coach Dan Hurley Agree to Contract Extension

Dan Hurley
The University of Rhode Island has reached a contract extension and restructure with head basketball coach Dan Hurley, according to ESPN. The deal is expected to be made official later this week.

The extension keeps Hurley at URI through the 2020-21 season. The exact details of the extension and restructure have not been released

Hurley's previous extension that he agreed to in 2013 kept him as a Ram through the 2020 season.

2013 on Repeat

After the 2013 season came to a close, Dan Hurley was rumored to be one of the lead candidates to take the Rutgers job. However, a little over a month later Hurley turned down that job and signed an extension with Rhode Island.

In three seasons under Hurley (two post extension), the URI men's basketball program has done a complete 180.

Hurley at URI

Hurley is 45-49 overall as head coach of the Rams including this past season went 23-10 and 13-5 in the A-10, getting URI into the postseason for the first time since 2010. The Rams won their first NIT game at home against Iona before falling on the road to Stanford in the second round.

Over the last couple of days, Hurley's future with Rhode Island has been a bit uncertain.

St. John's Rumors Over

On Friday afternoon, March 27, the St. John's Red Storm parted ways with head coach, Steve Lavin, and since then, Dan Hurley's name has come up as one of the leading candidates to take over the job.

Dan Hurley is from the New York/New Jersey area and knows the local recruits very well so the move would have made sense for him and for St. John's. It would have been a great move for St. John's.

However, this contract extension pretty much eliminates any chance of Hurley getting that job.

URI in 2015-16

After a successful 23-10 season in 14-15, URI will likely be one of the favorites to win the A-10 Conference in the 2015-16 season.

The Rams return most of their core players from this past year, including leading scorer E.C. Matthews, Hassan Martin, Jared Terrell and Jarvis Garrett, who will both enter their sophomore seasons after successful freshman seasons.
