URI Rolls Davidson, Advance to A-10 Championship

E.C. Matthews leads URI to A-10 Championship game.
The University of Rhode Island Rams are headed to the A-10 Championship game with their NCAA Tournament hopes still alive. 

URI cruised past Davidson 84-60 in Saturday's semifinal game to get to the A-10 title game for the first time since 2007. 

The Rams will face either VCU or Richmond in the title game.

URI went 0-1 against Richmond and 1-0 against VCU in the regular season. 

Hot Shooting Leads URI to Win 

Leading 20-17 with 10:18 to play in the first half, the Rams got three-pointers from E.C. Matthews, Jared Terrell and Nicola Akele en route to a 13-2 run to take a 33-19 lead with 6:42 to play. 

Davidson would get to within ten, 40-30, with 3:06 to play in the half before Matthews would knock down his fourth three of the half to give the Rams a 43-30 lead with 2:45 to play in the half. 

URI was 9 of 12 from three in the first half and take a 46-34 lead into the break. 

In the second half, the Rams hot shooting cooled off, but their defense kept the Wildcats from coming back. 

Davidson shot only 23% from three in the game and 40% from the field while turning the ball over eight times. 

The Wildcats would get as close as ten points in the half, before URI would push their lead up to 20 points following a Stanford Robinson three. 

URI would cruise the rest of the way with Martin and Matthews exiting the game with a few minutes left. 

Rhode Island shot 49% from the field and 60% from three in the game.  

Leading the Way

Matthews led the Rams with 19 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field and 4 of 4 from three.

Martin poured in 16 points on  8 of 15 shooting from the field while also pulling down six rebounds.
