Patriots Place Franchise Tag On Gostkowski

Gostkowski was named the Patriots' franchise player, Monday
The New England Patriots have officially used their franchise tag designation for the 2015 season, and have used it on kicker Stephen Gostkowski.

Gostkowski, a nine-year NFL veteran, has spent his entire career with the Patriots. He is just the second kicker to receive the designation as a Patriot, joining Adam Vinatieri who had the franchise tag placed on him in 2002 and 2005. Gostkowski’s new salary on the franchise tag will be $4.44-million, according to PatsCap.com.

Gostkowski is a career 86.8% field goal kicker, including a career-best 94.6% in 2014, en-route to a Patriots Super Bowl Championship. Gostkowski has also made 450 of 451 career PAT attempts, missing his only one in his rookie season.

“Stephen has been extremely productive and a vital component to our success since joining our team in 2006,” the Patriots said in a statement. “Utilizing the franchise designation allows both sides more time to try to reach an agreement, which is the goal.”

Gostkowski moved into first place on the Patriots’ all-time scoring list in December of the 2014 season and currently has 1,179 career points.

By placing the franchise tag designation on Gostkowski, the Patriots chose to not tag safety Devin McCourty. McCourty is a pending free agent and was believed by many to be the favorite to have the franchise tag placed on him.

It is believed that McCourty will now become a free agent when the new NFL league year begins on March 10.
