PC Shoots 23% From Field, Loses to Virginia

A painful one.
The Friars shot 13% from behind the three-point line and just 23% from the field — and learned you can’t do that against a team that just two seasons ago won the National Championship.

The Friars lost 58-40, in the Championship Round of the Roman Legends Classic at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
The Friars fall to 5-1 overall this season.
Graduate student Noah Horchler was the main contributor for the Friars, with a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds.
GAME STORY
FIRST HALF:
Horchler scored the first basket for the Friars. Shortly after, Al Durham made the team's first three-pointer.
Virginia held a slim lead, 10-7, heading into the first media timeout of the game.
With 10:36 left in the half, Virginia extended their lead to double-digits, 17-7. The Cavaliers were on a 13-0 scoring run, while the Friars had not scored in over six minutes.
With the offense struggling, Providence used their first timeout. Durham made a layup to end the scoring drought at the 9:51 mark.
Virginia's Armaan Franklin had four three-pointers in the first half. Franklin and Jayden Gardner each notched double figures before halftime for the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers controlled the game at the half, 30-15.
Providence shot 6-23 (26.1%) from the field, 1-9 (11.1%) from three, and 2-2 (100%) from the free-throw line.
Virginia shot 11-25 (44.0%) from the field, 4-7 (57.1%) from three, and 4-6 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.
SECOND HALF:
The Friars trailed by 15 points, 40-25, entering the first timeout of the half.
With 11:59 remaining, Horchler buried a three-pointer at the top of the key.
On the ensuing possession, Justin Minaya forced a turnover and Brycen Goodine (New Bedford, Mass.) capitalized on offense.
Goodine added a three-pointer less than a minute later to complete the 13-2 scoring run. The Friars narrowed the gap to six points, 42-36.
At the 4:58 mark, Nate Watson made the first field goal for the Friars in nearly six minutes. The Cavaliers still held the lead, 49-39, with under four minutes to play.
The Cavaliers finished the game on a 7-0 run. The Friars missed 17 of their final 18 shot attempts to close out the game.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Two players finished in double figures for the Friars, in Durham and Horchler.
- Jayden Gardner led the way for the Cavaliers with a double-double, 21 points and 13 rebounds.
- This marked the Friars' first game against an ACC team since December 4, 2018, when the Friars defeated Boston College in overtime, 100-95, in Chestnut Hil.
NEXT GAME:
The Friars head back home to take on Saint Peter's University on Saturday, Nov. 27 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence. Tip-off is at 12:00 p.m. on FS2.
The Friars hold a 4-1 all-time record against Saint Peter's. In their last meeting, the Friars defeated the Peacocks, 68-47, on Nov. 16, 2019 in Providence.
