PC Shoots 23% From Field, Loses to Virginia

PC had a tough night shooting PHOTO: PC
On Monday night, the Providence College men’s basketball team shot nearly 50% from behind the three-point line to defeat Northwestern, but on Tuesday night it was a new reality.

A painful one.

The Friars shot 13% from behind the three-point line and just 23% from the field — and learned you can’t do that against a team that just two seasons ago won the National Championship.

Adding to the shooting woes was the fact the Friars lost the battle of the boards to UVA by 11.

The Friars lost 58-40, in the Championship Round of the Roman Legends Classic at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The Friars fall to 5-1 overall this season.

Graduate student Noah Horchler was the main contributor for the Friars, with a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds.

GAME STORY

FIRST HALF:

Horchler scored the first basket for the Friars. Shortly after, Al Durham made the team's first three-pointer.

Virginia held a slim lead, 10-7, heading into the first media timeout of the game.

With 10:36 left in the half, Virginia extended their lead to double-digits, 17-7. The Cavaliers were on a 13-0 scoring run, while the Friars had not scored in over six minutes.

With the offense struggling, Providence used their first timeout. Durham made a layup to end the scoring drought at the 9:51 mark.

Virginia's Armaan Franklin had four three-pointers in the first half. Franklin and Jayden Gardner each notched double figures before halftime for the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers controlled the game at the half, 30-15.

Providence shot 6-23 (26.1%) from the field, 1-9 (11.1%) from three, and 2-2 (100%) from the free-throw line.

Virginia shot 11-25 (44.0%) from the field, 4-7 (57.1%) from three, and 4-6 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.

SECOND HALF:

The Friars trailed by 15 points, 40-25, entering the first timeout of the half.

With 11:59 remaining, Horchler buried a three-pointer at the top of the key.

On the ensuing possession, Justin Minaya forced a turnover and Brycen Goodine (New Bedford, Mass.) capitalized on offense.

Goodine added a three-pointer less than a minute later to complete the 13-2 scoring run. The Friars narrowed the gap to six points, 42-36.

At the 4:58 mark, Nate Watson made the first field goal for the Friars in nearly six minutes. The Cavaliers still held the lead, 49-39, with under four minutes to play.

The Cavaliers finished the game on a 7-0 run. The Friars missed 17 of their final 18 shot attempts to close out the game.
