Rams win, Bulldogs lose on the gridiron
Defense ruled the day in Kingston, while offense wasn't quite enough to win in Smithfield.
Dylan Smith tied a school record for URI with four field goals and the defense came up with a turnover with less than two minutes remaining as Rhode Island (3-5, 2-3 CAA) beat Richmond 12-10 on Family Day at Meade Stadium.
Smith's final field goal came with 9:16 remaining to give the Rams their final lead of the day. Richmond (2-5, 0-3 CAA) was driving for the potential go-ahead score...but on first-and-10 from the Rhody 33, Michael Strauss hit Rashad Ponder for 13 yards, and cornerback Rodney Chance forced a fumble. Andre Scott recovered the ball to clinch the victory.

As for Bryant, Sophomore Jose Depadua set a program record with a 100-yard kick return for a touchdown and senior Jordan Harris tied a program record with three touchdown receptions, but Sacred Heart compiled 500 yards of total offense to race past the Bulldogs 56-28, on Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium in Smithfield.
In a matchup of the top two run offenses and the top two run defenses in the NEC, it was the Pioneers (7-1, 2-1 NEC) that won the battle on Saturday. Sacred Heart rushed for 302 yards and held the Black and Gold (3-4, 1-1 NEC) to just four yards on 36 carries. The Pioneers also caused five Bryant turnovers.
