RI Favorites - World Cup Coverage

The beauty of digital media is that access to wifi makes just about everything possible, and this inspired an immensely popular series of articles and videos on 2010's World Cup, which ended going global, from 10,000 views on GoLocal, 8,500 views on YouTube and more than 30,000 views on the FIFA fan page.

GoLocalProv had Matt Culp, its own dedicated correspondent in South Africa for what is arguably the biggest sporting event worldwide, and Culp filed dozens of reports from overseas (often just minutes after a match),

while GoLocal countered with local coverage of emotional fans stateside supporting Team USA.

In fact, the East Side bar, Spats, hosted the American Outlaws, a passionate supporting group for Team USA, and GoLocalProv's Marques Coleman stopped in for Game 1 to shoot some video. What he found were fantastic, cinematic fans who made great video, who shared passion, and who were creating stories as much as their team, half a world away. Coleman shot and edited video with the Outlaws numerous times during the Cup, and struck video (and Internet) gold the day Landon Donovan buried an end-of-game goal to propel the United States into the next round of play.

The video, which generated thousands of views on GoLocalProv, went to YouTube and found an international audience. And on a summer day, Coleman discovered his spontaneous coverage of RI fans would become YouTube's video of the day.
