RI Lacrosse Stars Play on National Stage on ESPN

The battle for Rhode Island lacrosse supremacy took center stage nationally when #2 Virginia played #12 Cornell in the Face-Off Classic in Baltimore, MD before a national television audience on ESPN.

Two of Rhode Island’s best lacrosse players and rivals Colin Briggs of Bishop Hendricken and JJ Gilbane of Providence Country Day went head to head. Briggs is a star on the Virginia team and Gilbane is an emerging star for the Big Red.

Cornell led the game much of the first three quarters, but Virginia was finding ways to battle back.

Briggs tied the game 3-3 when Briggs scored his first goal. With 1:05 left in the first half, Briggs scored his second goal, bringing Virginia to within one down 5-4.

The game was tied for a third time when goals by Briggs to knot the game 7-7. Virginia won the Saturday Classic 11-9 after dominating the 4th quarter. 

Briggs three goal out burst led him to be being named Player-of-the-Game.

Both were All-Americans in Rhode Island in 2007
