About Shoemaker
Shoemaker moved to Newport over 50 years ago when he was stationed at the Navy Hospital, followed by his long career as a surgeon at Newport Hospital.
He and his wife, Stephanie, have stayed in Newport after their retirements, remaining active at the Newport Yacht Club, Ida Lewis Yacht Club and with various sailing events.
Shoemaker spent many years participating in community regattas and fostering new sailors, including his three children, Liz, Bill, and Becky.
He has won dozens of regattas in his Ensign "Challenger" and on his Shields "Hawk."
Also, Shoemaker competed in the Newport Yacht Club frostbiting series for forty-one consecutive years.
