Scott Cordischi On Sports: Manning, The Pats, URI & More!
Danny Hurley is on his way to Rhode Island with brother Bobby in tow. The Patriots made a big splash in free agency signing WR Brandon Lloyd. And Peyton Manning is now a Denver Bronco. What a week it was in the world of sports!
The Hurley to URI story should come as no surprise to those of you who are regular readers of this website. From the day Jim Baron was fired until now, we had this one pegged. The interesting aspect of this story is that former Duke star Bobby Hurley will join his brother in Kingston and not stay at Wagner to become the head coach. Bobby Hurley is a big name in the college basketball world and, because of that, has a lot of street cred which should help him significantly in recruiting.

That the Patriots were big players in free agency comes as a bit of a surprise as it is a practice they usually try to avoid. However, with the window of opportunity to win with Tom Brady at the helm slowly closing, maybe there is a sense of urgency up in Foxboro. Even more significant was Lloyd’s desire to become a Patriot so that he could play for offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels whom he had his best years with in Denver.

What made Denver more attractive than all of the other teams pursuing him? Only Manning knows the true answer to that question. However, the $96 million over 5 years certainly didn’t hurt the Broncos chances.
-Don’t get too excited over the Bruins 8-0 thrashing of the Maple Leafs the other night. Toronto stinks! However, they did seem to put in a much better effort on the defensive end of the ice than they have of late.
-The best way to describe this edition of the Boston Celtics is inconsistent. They can look so good beating good teams like the Clippers and the Hawks and can look so awful in losing to lousy teams like the Pistons and the Kings.
-Despite what he said at the end of the season, we all knew how John Elway felt about Tim Tebow by his reaction to him earlier in the season last year. The signing of Manning only confirms that Elway has no faith that Tebow is Denver’s quarterback of the future.
-And, no, I do not want to see Tim Tebow in a Patriots uniform.
-A place like Jacksonville, which has trouble selling tickets and is close to Gainsville where Tebow went to college, makes more sense.
-I don’t know which Syracuse team will show up in Boston this week, but I hope it’s the one who beat Kansas State as opposed to the one which struggled to get by NC-Ashville.
-Whether you are a fan of men’s or women’s college basketball, you can get your fix locally this weekend with the men’s East regional in Boston and the women’s Kingston regional at URI.
-The Miami Dolphins have gone from a storied franchise to NFL punch line.
-As a Patriots fan, I have never liked the Steelers. But I have to admit that the recently retired Hines Ward was a pretty damn good receiver.
-The Patriots-Colts rivalry is as dead as a doornail. Could Pats-Broncos now replace that?

-Miami has swung and missed on the likes of Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and, most recently, Matt Flynn and Alex Smith. Where have you gone Dan Marino? Dolphin nation turns its lonely eyes to you!
-As much as I love south Florida for warm weather, great golf and great beaches, I’m thinking that I should pick another city to visit where the Patriots play a road game because it shouldn’t be much of a game down there.
-Ed Cooley to PC. Ricky Ledo to PC. Kris Dunn to PC. Andre LaFleur to PC. And now Danny Hurley to URI. What do they all have in common? They were all stories broken right here on GoLocalProv.com over the last year.
-David Garrard to Miami? What’s the matter, Tommy Hodson, Mark Wilson, Tony East or Scott Zolak weren’t available?
-About the only smart thing coming out of Dolphins headquarters these days was a story claiming that they are not interested in Tim Tebow.
-Then again, he’s probably better than what they have.
-It’s somewhat ironic that the B’s beat the Canucks for the Stanley Cup last spring, yet they haven’t been the same team since they lost that all-out war against Vancouver at the Garden on January 7th.
-I never like to wish anyone ill will, but count me among those Celtics fans who is not disappointed that Jermaine O’Neal will be out for the season.
-There are 4 Big Ten, 4 Big East, 2 ACC, 2 Big 12 and 2 SEC teams in the Sweet 16. So much for Cinderella!
-And there are 4 teams from Ohio in the Sweet 16 – Ohio State, Cincinnati, Xavier and Ohio.
-I don’t know which I hate more, Baylor’s fluorescent yellow uniforms they have worn in the NCAA Tournament or the camouflage uniforms they wore in the Big 12 tourney.
-Speaking of Baylor, Brady Heslip nailed 9 three’s in the Bears’ win over Colorado on Saturday. That’s the same Brady Heslip that Al Skinner recruited to Boston College. Sorry, Gene DeFellippo!

-I have never been more disinterested in Red Sox spring training than I am this year.
-And that is why the NFL Draft cannot come soon enough!
-Do the Hurley brothers have any eligibility left?
