Scott Cordischi On Sports: Rooting For Tebow A No-Brainer

I’m rooting for Tim Tebow. Not Sunday when his Denver Broncos host the New England Patriots, but in general I am rooting for Tim Tebow.

While the Green Bay Packers attempt to do something that the 2007 Patriots couldn’t do, go 16-0 in the regular season and 3-0 in the postseason, they are not receiving nearly the amount of attention they deserve because “Tebowmania” has gripped the entire nation!

Unless you’re like the guy in the Geico commercial and have been living under a rock, you already know what Tebow has accomplished this season. In 8 games as a starter for Denver, he has led the team to an impressive (7-1) record taking them from (1-4) and the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes to (8-5) and the top of the AFC West.

He has engineered a total of six 4th quarter comebacks in his first 11 starts in the NFL which is a record. Not bad for a guy who has many mechanical flaws and team president and Broncos’ legend John Elway openly questioning his ability to play in the NFL.

What’s hard to understand is the fact that Tebow has become such a polarizing figure. For, while many people like myself are rooting for the man to succeed, others would give anything to see him fail.

His detractors will tell you that he is not your prototypical NFL quarterback and can’t throw worth a lick, that his option-style approach to the position will eventually get him killed in the NFL. They will also tell you that they are annoyed by his constant references to the Lord Jesus Christ and that he does not favor Tebow’s Broncos over other NFL teams.

I say, what’s not to like? Whether or not his style of play fits the prototypical NFL style that personnel people are looking for, he wins! Why? Because he is a winner! He won at the University of Florida in the best conference in all of college football (the SEC) and he’s winning in the NFL.

And who cares if he thanks God after each game? The fact is that he is the atypical NFL thug who thanks only his agent for getting him a big contract, runs with murderers or shoots himself in the leg with his own gun in a crowded nightclub. Tebow can thank Spongebob Squarepants after every win for all I care. He genuinely appears to be a good God-fearing Christian and what’s not to like about that?

Just like Doug Flutie who was told he couldn’t play in the NFL because he was too short (5’-9”), Tebow has many so-called “experts” telling him that he can’t play in the NFL. Maybe they will be proven right in due time. But I, for one, am going to enjoy Tebow’s run while it lasts because there are so many good reasons to root for the man and not a single good reason not to.

-Bill O’Brien did the right thing Sunday when he held Tom Brady accountable for his 4th quarter interception instead of allowing Brady to pass the buck to WR Tiquan Underwood.

-And something tells me that Tim Tebow won’t be hurling f-bombs at his offensive coordinator anytime soon.

-With Chris Paul’s luck, he couldn’t even trade in his car if he wanted to.

-This from a football fan in South County, “they have changed the name of the Dallas Cowboys to the Allas Cowboys because they have no D.”

-Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski has replaced the Dos Equis man as the world’s most interesting man. “Stay thirsty my friends!”

-Good luck to retiring Brown University Athletic Director Mike Goldberger, an all around great guy!

-The Celtics will be very competitive this season but banner #18 seems like a long shot.

-NL MVP Ryan Braun should take his own advice and come clean about his alleged use of synthetic testosterone because nobody believes his denials.

-Dallas players had better hide their mothers because Delonte West is now a Maverick.

-When Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross whacked head coach Tony Sparano this week, was Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” playing in the background?

-Rumor out of Kansas City is that Scott Pioli may try to bring in Rams offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to be the Chiefs next head coach reuniting him with Matt Cassel.

-For those of you not looking forward to winter, remember that the days start getting longer in just one week.

-Despite the Bernie Fine fiasco in Syracuse, the Orange is the #1-ranked team in both the AP and the ESPN/USA Today college basketball polls this week.

-It was Tuukka Time at the Garden last night.

-Patriots first round draft choice Nate Solder was recruited by and wanted to play basketball at Dartmouth but couldn’t afford to go to school there so he went to Colorado to play football. Looks like things worked out just fine for Solder.

-I will be as shocked as anyone if the Patriots can win the Super Bowl with this defense.

-That sound of crickets you hear is the hot stove season for the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

-Chronic sports radio caller Steve from Fall River continues to harp on the fact that Bill Belichick the GM has done a poor job of late. What one of the hosts needs to ask him is whether or not he would want to risk losing Belichick all together should Bob Kraft suggest that someone else “shop for the groceries.” That’s not a risk I’d be willing to take.

-Should I start my Christmas shopping yet?
