St. Andrew's: Michael Carter-Williams Named NBA Rookie of the Year

Former St. Andrew’s (Barrington, Rhode Island) basketball star Michael Carter-Williams will be named NBA Rookie of the Year for his outstanding performance this season with the Philadelphia 76ers.

104 of the 124 voters gave Carter-Williams their 1st place vote, and he won by a wide margin over second place Victor Oladipo of the Orlando Magic.

Carter-Williams averaged 16.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game for the 76ers this season. He was the NBA’s Rookie of the Month 4 times after being selected with the 11th overall selection in the 2013 NBA Draft.

Carter-Williams was a star in the local high school basketball scene just a few years ago. He played his freshman season at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School in Massachusetts before transferring to St. Andrew’s for his final 3 seasons.

After graduating from St. Andrew’s in 2011, Carter-Williams played 2 seasons of college basketball at Syracuse before declaring for the draft.  GoLocal broke the news of Carter-Williams turning pro in February of 2013.

As a 6’6” tall point guard, Carter-Williams is a matchup nightmare in the NBA and he was the lone bright spot in an otherwise dismal season for a 76ers team that had the worst record in the NBA this season at 19-63.
