The 10 Best Red Sox Free Agent Signings in Larry Lucchino Era

On Saturday, it was announced that Boston Red Sox President and CEO Larry Lucchino would be stepping down from his position at the end of the season.

Over the past few years, according to multiple reports, Lucchino’s role in the Red Sox front office has been diminished and his influence was no longer as prominent as had been in previous seasons.

Despite the reports, Lucchino has proven himself (especially in his tenure in Boston) as a Hall of Fame-caliber executive and will remain as one of the team’s three owners.

Over the past 14 seasons, Lucchino has assembled teams that have gone on to win three World Series championships - including the 2004 Red Sox team that won the first championship in 86 years.

Beyond the three titles, Lucchino’s best moments have included the renovation of Fenway Park, the characterization of the New York Yankees as “The Evil Empire,” and blockbuster trades that resulted in fan favorites Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Ramirez and Jon Lester leaving Boston, and franchise-altering additions Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell arriving.

However, there have been substantial mistakes made in free agency in the past five years that may have contributed to four of five losing seasons (see: Carl Crawford, Pablo Sandoval).

GoLocalWorcester has put together a list of the ten best free agent signings during the Lucchino era. This list includes free agents that played vital roles during championship seasons, and recent signings of free agents whose production has yet come to fruition. The list looks at initial major league contracts issued by the Sox - and the return over time or potential of production to come. This list does not look at trades or re-signings. Instead, it looks specifically at free agent signings of players that left another team to come to Boston.
