URI Basketball Is Officially in Chaos

Toppin is the latest to transfer
The University of Rhode Island Rams have seen a mass exodus of young talented players this spring. The cupboard is functionally bare.

Now, it is the super talented Jacob Toppin who is out the door at URI.

Toppin’s social media post sounded just like all the other players who announced their departures from Rhode Island.

“I want to start off by thanking the entire URI family,” Toppin wrote on Instagram. “I also want to thank the coaching staff and players. This past year has been a great learning experience. After thoroughly thinking things through, I’ve decided that it is best for me to enter my name in the portal. This decision has nothing to do with anyone on the coaching staff. I feel moving forward, this is what is best for me. I wish everyone nothing but the best moving forward. Love you Rhody Nation.”

Toppin is the younger brother Dayton’s Obi Toppin who is now slated in the #2 slot going to Cleveland Cavaliers in many NBA mock drafts.

For coach David Cox who just finished his second year is now 39-24 overall and 22-14 in the Atlantic 10. Respectable numbers, but difficult to replicate with only two starters - Fatts Russell and Jermaine Harris returning. Oh yea, and Russell has announced for the NBA draft.

Latest Player to Leave

All of the URI transferring players thanked the coaches, appreciated the experience and pronounced their love -- just as they exited Kingston.

Also departing are Tyrese Martin, Mekhi Long, Dana Tate, and Gregory Hammond.

Put your hands over your eyes and don’t peek — it is a massive train wreck. The carnage is everywhere.

Former University of Maryland players Makhi and Makhel Mitchell announced that they are coming to Rhode Island. The twins picked URI over other reported suitors including Georgetown University and Providence College. Depending on NCAA rulings they won't be eligible for at least the first semester.

Former URI star Hassan Martin's younger brother Malik announced that he was transferring from the University of Charlotte. The younger Martin averaged 9.2 ppg.

Five going and three coming.

Regardless, the program is now officially 'in chaos."
