URI Edges Brown 31-28 to Win Governor's Cup for 2nd Straight Year

The University of Rhode Island edged the Brown Bears 31-28 to win the Governor’s Cup on Saturday afternoon in a thriller at Brown Stadium.

It is URI’s second straight Governor’s Cup win and the program’s first win at Brown Stadium since 2007.

The Rams improve to 1-4 overall, while Brown falls to 1-2 on the season.

Game Decided in 4th

The 104th Governor’s Cup game came down to the final quarter of action.

After leading for a good portion of the game, URI trailed Brown 28-24 with just over six minutes to play in the game.

On URI’s drive, quarterback Vito Priore connected with Aaron Parker on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 5:43 left to play to give the Rams a 31-28 lead following an extra point by C.J. Carrick.

Priore completed 31 of 44 passes for 389 yards and three touchdowns in the game, while Parker hauled in seven catches for 87 yards and two scores.

On Brown’s ensuing possession, the Bears took the ball on their own 32-yard line, but a sack and an intentional grounding penalty pushed them back to the 24.

The Bears would move the ball to their own 46-yard line before being forced to punt with just over four minutes to play.

Brown would not get the ball back.

The Rams used a nine-play, 48-yard drive to seal the win.

Brown Rallies

Prior to the final sequence, the Rams led Brown 24-14 to start the fourth quarter, however, the Bears would rally.

In the opening seconds of the quarter, Brown’s Allen Smith found the end zone on a three-yard run to make the score 24-21 URI.

After the Brown defense came up with a stop, the Bears offense would get the ball back with just over 12 minutes to play.

Led by quarterback EJ Perry, the Bears would go on a ten-play, 81-yard drive ending with a touchdown pass from Perry to Smith to give the Bears a 28-24 lead following the extra point with 8:20 to go.

Perry finished the game completing 35 of 52 passes for 420 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed eight times for 92 yards.

Smith finished the game with two receiving touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, while Jakob Prall hauled in five catches for 111 yards.

Next Up 

The Bears return to action on Saturday, October 12 when they host Holy Cross at Brown Stadium.

Game time is set for 12:30 p.m.

The Rams also return to action on October 12 when they visit Virginia Tech.

Game time is set for 4 p.m.
