URI Falls to Fordham, Misses 3 at Buzzer That Would Have Tied Game

Another game, another heartbreak.

The University of Rhode Island men's basketball team nearly upset Fordham in New York on Saturday.

Rhode Island battled to the end, but a potential game-tying 3-pointer by Ishmael Leggett went off the rim as the final horn sounded and URI fell 74-71 at Fordham.

The Rams have now lost seven in a row.(8-20, 4-12 Atlantic 10). Malik Martin led the Rams with 17 points.

Fordham (23-6, 11-5 A-10) escaped with the win.

Highlights:

- Fordham scored 32 points in the paint and had 13 second-chance points on 17 offensive rebounds.
- Rhode Island had an 18-4 edge in fastbreak points.
- URI held Fordham to 39.7 percent from the field and 34.6 percent (9-for-26) from 3-point range.
- Meanwhile, Rhody shot 40.4 percent overall and 56.3 percent (9-for-16) from the arc.
- Rhode Island also was 84.2 percent from the free throw line (16-of-19).
- Redshirt senior Malik Martin led URI with 17 points and eight rebounds. He played 39 minutes.
- Sophomore Sebastian Thomas had a career-high 16 points to go with four assists and three steals.
- Sophomore Ishmael Leggett had 14 points, six rebounds and two steals.
- Redshirt junior Jalen Carey had nine points and five boards, while redshirt freshman Brandon Weston added five points and three boards.
- Freshman Rory Stewart scored five point, all of which came in the final four minutes.
