URI Wins Governor's Cup 28-13 Over Brown

The University of Rhode Island Rams football team defeated Brown 28-13 at Meade Stadium to win the Governor's Cup for the first time since 2010. The win is also URI's first win of the season, moving them to 1-4 overall. 

The Bears drop to 1-2 on the season, and have lost two straight games since beating Bryant in their season opener.

URI trailed 13-7 at the start of the third quarter but then the run game took over. 

The Rams took the lead for good on their first possession of the third quarter on a three yard run by T.J. Anderson to give the Rams a 14-13 lead after the extra point. 

The Rams would take that lead into the fourth quarter. 

In the final frame, junior running back, Harold Cooper, took the game over starting with 36 yard touchdown run with 7:54 to go to put the Rams up 21-13. 

After a defensive stand, the Rams would hand the ball back to Cooper with 5:52 to play and he would run 42 yards for a touchdown, giving URI their winning margin.  

Harold Cooper had 18 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He averaged 7.5 yards per carry. 

Brown Takes the Lead

Leading 7-6, URI quarterback Jordan Vazzano’s pass was intercepted by Brown’s Will Twyman who returned it 30 yards for a touchdown to put Brown up 13-7. A lead they would take into the half. 

The interception was Brown’s fourth of the season. 

URI took their 7-6 lead with 45 seconds left in the fist quarter when Vazzano connected with receiver Charlie McKeeman for a ten yard touchdown pass. That completion was Vazzano’s only one of the first half as he went 1 for 16 passing in the half. 

Brown led 6-0 with 9:24 left in the first quarter when Alex Jette caught a six yard touchdown pass from Brown quarterback, Kyle Moreno. Brown attempted a two point conversion but it was not successful. 

Inside the Numbers

Brown quarterback, Kyle Moreno, completed 20 of 50 passes for 137 yards with a touchdown and one interception, while rushing 11 times for a loss of 12 yards. 

Johnny Pena led the Brown running attack, totaling 55 yards on seven carries, while Jalen Broome followed up with 33 yards on nine carries. 

Alex Jette led the Bears receivers, hauling in five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown. 

For URI, Vazzano completed four of his 24 pass attempts for 42 yards with a touchdown and an interception. 

T.J. Anderson followed up Cooper's 135 yards rushing with 39 yards rushing on nine carries, while Mckeeman caught two passes for 21 yards and a touchdown. 

Next up 

The Rams hit the road for two straight contests starting on October 8 against Villanova and then October 15 against Stony Brook. 

The Brown Bears will return home to host Stetson on October 8.
