Why Cooley Needs to Make a Run in This NCAA Tournament

The Friars need a big run in the NCAA tournament
Ed Cooley has done what Dave Gavitt and Joe Mullaney did not and could not do — take the Friars to five consecutive NCAA tournaments. When you top a couple of Hall of Famers it is a pretty good achievement.

But what Gavitt, Mullaney and Rick Pitino did at Providence was have tremendous post-season success. Gavitt and Pitino had Final Four appearances. Mullaney won two NIT championships -- 1961 and 1963 when it was the equal or preferred tournament in college basketball.

He has also piled up a series of top recruiting classes. Annually PC makes the elite group of colleges scouting rankings -- the Friars that make all the ESPN, 24/7 and RIVALS top lists.

The 2018 PC class is ranked by 24/7 to be the 19th best in America.

PC 2017 class was ranked 21. PC is right there with the elite programs in America.

But, the Friars tournament runs have not matched the recruiting prowess.

In the four previous Cooley-NCAA tourney appearances, the Friars notched just 1 win and 4 loses.

In 2016, the Friars' last-second 70-69 win over USC is the only win.

Then, in 2016, the Friars beat University of Southern California and then got beat on by #1 ranked UNC 66-85.

And, last year the USC Trojans got revenge on the Friars. Friars lost 71-75.

Now, it is time for Cooley to make an NCAA run like he just achieved in the Big East Tournament.

The #10 ranked Friars need a win against the #7 ranked Texas A&M Aggies. and then let's see what happens.
