Chomping At The Bit To Get On The Slopes?

Ski season is upon us … now all we need is for the weather to cooperate. It has turned colder during the past couple of days across northern ski areas and some areas have already turned on the snow guns, but for the most part there probably won’t be many areas or trails open for Thanksgiving.

In New Hampshire, Bretton Woods would like to get 1-2 trails open this weekend and Cannon, Cranmore, Crotched, Waterville, Ragged, Loon and Sunapee are shooting to open next weekend. In Vermont, Killington has 2 lifts and 8 trails open, many other areas are ramping up the snowmaking as temperatures fall with an eye to opening as soon as conditions allow. In Maine, Sunday River is reporting 1 trail open while areas like Sugarloaf, Saddleback, and Shawnee Peak are pretty much in the same boat with lots of others … cranking up the snow guns while waiting for nature’s own bounty.

While northern areas may see a warm-up early next week prospects improve from mid-week on for some light amounts of natural snow and then the arrival of Arctic air right after Thanksgiving will provide nearly ideal snowmaking conditions. Once the cold air arrives, it should stick around for an extended period.

So, if you’re itching to get going you may have to wait a bit longer. Since the situation is very fluid and iffy this early in the season, it’s always best to call your favorite spot to check on their status.
