How The Bay and Our Weather Interact
For such a tiny spot on the American map, Rhode Island boasts an atlas' worth of varied and beautiful possessions. Of many assets, its most beautiful and valuable may be Narragansett Bay, also the state’s largest and most dominant physical feature. The Bay not only covers fully one tenth of the entire area of the state, it also splits our small state in two (both physically and socially … East Bay, West Bay … to some, never the twain shall meet!).
From my point of view (as a meteorologist), the Bay plays a major part in the climate and weather that we experience—both affecting it and in turn being affected by it. It is a complex, rhythmical environmental dance.
Our small state experiences an amazing variety of weather on any given day across its 48 by 37 mile area. And Narragansett Bay, our jewel, affects our temperatures, precipitation, wind, and cloud cover. In turn, our local weather impacts the Bay and those of us who live on its shores, as well as work and play on it sparkling waters.
