How To Use The Ghiorse Factor

John Ghiorse
I devised the Ghiorse Factor more than 35 years ago. It was originally intended as a quick thumbnail describing weather conditions for those who work outside activity. However, over the years, it has gained broader acceptance as a brief guide for any outdoor and travel.

Simply put, the Ghiorse Factor scale runs from a minimum of zero to a maximum of 10. A zero is assigned to the WORST possible weather for being outside. A 10 describes the BEST possible weather conditions. I usually predict a 5 or below if there is any precipitation expected. The scale slides, depending on the time of year, so that at 10 in December is obviously not the same as a 10 in July.

The number is not derived by a formula, but rather from my subjective evaluation of the overall elements such as wind, temperature, humidity, cloud cover and precipitation expected for the day. The Factor can change during the day as weather conditions change, so be sure to check back often for my latest updates especially on days with active weather.
