Snowiest January Ever?

The snow just keeps on piling up as we keep getting hit with one snowstorm after another on a regular basis … five storms so far this month totaling 30.7 inches at T.F. Green Airport where the official records are tallied. But is this the snowiest January stretch on record? Surprisingly, not by a long shot!

There have been snowier January’s and not too long ago at that. The record is held by January 1996 when we had two big storms and several smaller affairs that totaled 37.4 inches. In 2005 36.7 inches piled up with 31.7 inches being recorded in 1948. As of today this January ranks fourth on the list that goes back to 1904.

As for the winter as a whole, we’ve amassed 40.9 inches which is more than what we average during a whole winter season but we have a long way to go to top the all-time season record of 106.4 inches accumulated during the 1995-96 season. But the way things are going and with more than half the winter to go I wouldn’t bet the farm against it.
