Beauty Insider: Luck Be a Lily – Lily of the Valley Spring Beauty

Lily of the valley, the smell of spring.
One spring, as the story is told, King Charles of France was presented with a fragrant posy of muguet: the delicate green sprigs capped with teeny white bells known as lily of the valley. So touched was the king by this gesture, which signified luck and prosperity, that he continued the tradition that still exists each spring in France. But today, many French men offer women the bottled version of the flower instead.

Lily of the valley makes a charming spring perfume and can be found in other beauty aids too. Here are some favorites:

  • Christian Dior Diorissimo is certainly the most famous muguet. Created in 1955, it became the emblem of the couture house. It is a beautiful watery lily that is wearable and feminine. Simply put: it smells like spring. Available at Amazon.com.
  • Woods of Windsor Lily of the Valley Moisturizing Bath and Shower Gel has a soft luxurious lather which leaves an elusive green note behind. Its nuance is refreshing and lovely. Available at Amazon.com.
  • Yardley Lily of the Valley Floral Soap . For centuries, Yardley has created this creamy triple-milled bath soap which evokes the very first breath of spring. Lucky indeed, to have a thick scented bar at bathtime. Available at VermontCountryStore.com.
  • Crabtree & Evelyn The New Lily Ultra-Moisturizing Hand Therapy. A lush cream that conditions your hands with the heart of lily of the valley blended with dewy greens. Muted and mossy, it hints at longer days to come. Available at CrabtreeandEvelyn.com.
  • Guerlain Muguet 2014. For the ultimate splurge, Guerlain creates a limited edition bottle with a special version of the lily – it contains a wink of bergamot. Their long-standing love affair with the bloom dates back to 1840, and at $550 a bottle, this floral masterpiece is both timeless and exquisite. Available at Guerlain.com.
