Crowdfunding Campaign For Rudy Cheeks Launched: Moore News

Rudy Cheeks
Friends of former Providence Phoenix writer and WHJJ and WHJY radio personality Rudy Cheeks have started a GoFundMe campaign to help him defray costs since the closing of the Phoenix.

The GoFundMe campaign states that “Rudy has always been there for the Rhode Island music/arts/journalism community - helping out in any way he can - always willing to give his time and talent to anyone or any cause that asks him.” As of Wednesday morning, $5440 had been raised out of a goal of $10,000.

“What happened was that some of my friends knew that I was struggling, especially after the Providence Phoenix went out of business,” Cheeks (whose real name is Bruce McCrae) told GoLocalProv on Tuesday. “I had been looking for work that would pay, but also continue to have a lot of things that I've been doing all along that is not compensated.”

“My friend said she thought that this would be a good way for my friends to help out and that a number of them had been wanting to do something like this, so she asked me if it was okay with me. I was very reluctant but, as there were no other prospects on the horizon (although I am still hopeful), I said it was okay. It is somewhat embarrassing, but I've worked my whole life and will continue to and hope that there will be something soon.”
