First Ever Urban Planning High School Set to Open in Providence in September

Charette Charter High School
A first of its kind Urban Planning and Historic Preservation High School is set to open this September in Providence.

Charette Charter High School is now accepting ninth and 10th-grade students from Providence only for classes that will start in September.

“There’s a direct connection between the school’s mission and the school’s unique sense of community in Providence—the architecture, the history, educational and civic empowerment, the Charette students will be in the field learning about city planning, the preservation of historic buildings, and engage in the community to become participants in civic affairs, problem solvers, and critical thinkers,” said founder and operator Dr. Robert Pilkington.

About the School

Charette is a public, tuition-free, four-year high school which serves only Providence students through a blended learning program with a focus on Urban Planning and Historic Preservation Arts.

The Summit Learning Program will be used to support core content and project-based community learning.

“In Creating Innovators, renowned educator Tony Wagner addresses the role that teachers can play in developing young people who can make the world a better place. I hope that as an innovative team at Charette we can achieve this goal for the youth of Providence,” said Dr. Kathy Vespia, Charette’s Executive Director.

Charette Charter High School is located at 335 Westminster Street in Providence on the 2nd floor of an Art Deco building, which also houses the RI Secretary of State’s Archives.
