Labor Unrest at Plimoth Plantation - Workers Petition for Better Conditions

Plimoth Plantation workers are presenting a petition with more than 1,000 signatures in support of union efforts to improve workplace conditions.

According to the Society of Allied Museum Professionals (SAMP), the petition comes after almost a year of negotiations in which management and workers have yet to reach a contract agreement after workers voted to unionize last November.

With the petition, SAMP hopes to address issues of job insecurity, low wages, low staffing levels, as well as, health and safety concerns.

SAMP will announce their petition drive in support of their efforts at Plymouth Rock on Tuesday, November 21.

They plan to deliver their petition to management on Thanksgiving.

“My family moved to Plymouth about five years ago when our daughter was a little older than two, and we have been members at Plimoth Plantation ever since, making frequent visits. Our daughter treasures the long conversations she has had with many of the workers, and we are so grateful for your teaching, attention, and care.  It is upsetting to learn that our membership fees, which we had assumed went to pay the workers and maintain the site, are being spent on an expensive union-busting firm. This is not good stewardship of the funds Plimoth Plantation has been entrusted with as a nonprofit. Please know that you have our family's support and the support of many others as well in this struggle for fair working conditions,” said Greg Pehrson, a Plymouth resident, and museum member.
