Two of the largest newspaper groups in the country are slashing staff.

Last week the Los Angeles Times announced it was cutting 13% of its workforce.

The Times, in announcing the reductions, said it is becoming the latest news organization to "contract amid economic pressures brought on by advertising and print readership declines."

“The Times is eliminating 74 positions in the newsroom, representing about 13% of the total," said the LA Times.

"Full-time and temporary workers will be let go, including a handful of managers. Reporting positions are expected to be largely spared but the production staff will be scaled back. Nearly a third of the cuts come from news and copy editor ranks. Some photographers, audience engagement editors and audio producers will also be affected."

New York Times Makes Cuts

The New York Times last January bought The Athletic for a reported $550 million, but less than 18 months later, the cuts are beginning.

According to The Times, “David Perpich, the publisher of The Athletic, and Steven Ginsberg, its executive editor, announced 'a significant reorganization' of the newsroom in a note to the staff."

"They said the publication was shifting away from having one beat reporter per sports team to broader coverage ‘telling the most compelling stories for fans across the teams in a given league, drawing on both local and national reporting expertise.’”
