Rhode Island International Airport Celebrates 90th Anniversary
The Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) marked Rhode Island International Airport’s 90th anniversary on Monday, celebrating 90 years of serving the state and region.
Originally founded as Hillsgrove State Airport, the airport became the first state-owned and operated airport in the United States and was formally dedicated on September 27, 1931.

“Despite the many hardships of the pandemic, the 90th Anniversary of Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport provides an opportunity for all to take pride in the accomplishments of the past decades, while looking ahead to prosperity in our future,” said Iftikhar Ahmad, President and CEO of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation.
“I want to congratulate Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport on their 90 year anniversary,” said Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi.
This month, RIAC announced that the airport was selected as one of the Top Three Domestic Airports in the Travel + Leisure 2021 World’s Best Awards readers’ survey.
It marked the latest award of excellence for Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport within the travel industry, which has been recognized by national reviewers seven times in the last five years including one of the “Best Small Airports” in the nation in USA Today’s “Ten Best” Readers’ Choice Awards for 2020 and 2021.
“On behalf of the RIAC Board of Directors, we are thrilled to celebrate the anniversary of our airport with the travelers we serve, and we look forward to another 90 years striving to be the best airport we can to benefit Rhode Island and all of Southern New England,” said RIAC Board Chair Jonathan N. Savage.
