RI Foundation Promotes Buy Local RI Campaign

The Rhode Island Foundation and Providence business leaders are urging shoppers to make purchases from locally owned businesses using the new website buylocalri.org on small business Saturday and throughout the holiday season.

Buy Local RI is a website where only locally owned businesses are listed. Consumers can then search for them using a number of different fields like location, product or service or company name. There is no cost for businesses or consumers to use the website.

"Patronizing local shops and restaurants has the potential to payoff in a big way. We are talking about money that each one of us is already spending, so no additional investment is required. The return can be spectacular as the cash circulates throughout our economy," said Foundation President Neil Steinberg.

According to a study done by the foundation, shifting just ten percent of purchasing that Rhode Island shoppers do from chains to independent, locally owned businesses have the potential to add $373 million to the state's economy.

"As Mayor of Providence, I am pleased to join the Rhode Island Foundation for the launch of this statewide Buy Local Rhode Island initiative," said Providence Mayor Angel Taveras

The Rhode Island Foundation is the largest funder of non-profit organizations in Rhode Island. In 2013,  the Foundation made grants of over $31 million to various organizations addressing pressing issues and needs in the state's communities.
