Smart Benefits: New Study Shows Exchange Satisfaction Higher

According to the recently released J.D. Power 2015 Health Insurance Marketplace Exchange Shopper and Re-Enrollment (HIX) Study, members of health plans obtained through a Marketplace exchange are more satisfied than those who obtained plans outside of an exchange.

The study of 3,037 new enrollees and returning enrollees measured satisfaction with Marketplace health plans obtained for 2014 by examining six attributes: claims processing; communications; cost; coverage and benefits; customer service; and provider selection.

Members' satisfaction with exchange plans was 696 out of 1,000 possible points, which was 17 points higher than overall health plan satisfaction in the J.D. Power 2015 Member Health Plan Study of traditional, employer-based plans not purchased on an exchange.

Cost was the most influential attribute driving satisfaction among Marketplace plan members. Another key factor was whether plans were acquired through a federal or state exchange:

- Marketplace plan satisfaction was highest in states that partnered with the federal government on their exchanges, with an average rating of 716 out of 1,000,

- Exchange enrollees who used the federal exchange were the second-most satisfied, with an average rating 699 out of 1,000.

- Those who used state-based exchanges were third-most satisfied, with an average rating of 683 out of 1,000.
