Son’s Motivating Art and Final Show
Skye also discussed the personal power of the gallery and the positive impact it has had other family.
“My first born son has had a particular journey. Marked at 19 when he had his first psychotic break through the relentless cyclical episodes that followed, to his life today. Solomon is now 28, has a much deeper understanding of his diagnosis of 'schizoaffective disorder' and is on disability,” she said.
“Part of my inspiration for opening the gallery was about having the flexibility as a self-employed person to respond to his needs and his episodes as 'employment' was unable to be so adaptable. What I didn't anticipate was how this work would feed his interest to paint. The chaos has always been about words and voices. Images provided calm. He has found comfort in a new language. We can all be so inspired,” said Sky.
“As this space closes, I will honor his journey, this community, and all of the life that came into 381 Broadway, by hanging my son's paintings. Solomon Issachar Williams Skye. They are his. I am his. We live in need of connection and care. Paint can calm the soul,” she said.
The self titled show, DUALITY, will be on view at Skye Gallery which will be open for its final time at 381 Broadway on Friday, February 19th from 2pm to 7pm and Saturday, February 20 from 12 noon to 7pm.
Skye announced a change in career, “I have joined the management team at Coffee Exchange, a local roaster and café sourcing fair trade organic coffee. Charlie Fishbein, the owner, was the first to invest in the idea of Skye Gallery in 2017.”
“Skye Gallery will remain active as a business and an opportunity for artists and patrons. Curation, pop-ups, artist support, etc...until its physical re-emergence. Skye Gallery 2023,” said Skye.
