Chefs from Ireland to Compete in Newport Chowder Competition

Irish culinary talents Frank Walsh, Rory McHugh, and Martin Shanahan will compete in the Newport Yachting Center’s 33rd Annual Polar Seltzer Great Chowder Cook-Off on Saturday, June 7th, bringing their "Clew Bay Chowder" recipe from County Mayo, Ireland, to the "chowdah lovers" of Rhode Island.

Hailing from Newport's sister city of Kinsale, the Irish trio are the stars of the "All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off" event that was inspired by and modeled after the Newport competition.

“We can’t wait to return Newport this year and partner with Chef T.R. McGrath of McGrath Clambakes to produce some award-winning chowder!” said Walsh. “My partner, John McGrath, had to stay back in Westport to run the restaurant, but when I heard we were working with the Newport McGraths, I thought ‘It must be fate.’”

“The McGrath Clambakes & Catering Team is very excited to host our ‘distant cousins’ and All-Ireland Chowder Champs, The West Bar, in their bid to be crowned champions of Newport’s Polar Seltzer Great Chowder Cook-off,” said McGrath.

The Chefs will be competing in the "Best Seafood" chowder category at the competition, which produces over 4,000 gallons of chowder.
