In April, customers of Dave’s Marketplaces in Rhode Island donated food or funds to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

Over 20,000 pounds

Donations exceeding $3,000 were matched by Dave’s Marketplace for a cash gift of $6,546. This enabled the Food Bank to purchase nearly 20,000 pounds of food. Customers donated more than 600 pounds of food, pushing the total over 20,000 pounds.

“It’s powerful when communities work together like this to make a significant impact on hunger in their own neighborhoods,” says Andrew Schiff, Chief Executive Officer of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “Dave’s is known for its strong customer relationships, and it’s evident that these relationships result in the tremendous generosity we’ve seen in this successful food and fundraising campaign.”

Providing food to the RI community

The Food Bank’s network of food pantries provides food to 63,000 Rhode Islanders every month. One in three served is a child under the age of 18.

“This donation comes at a critical time, when donations are typically lower because most people are thinking about summertime and recreation,” says Schiff. “And yet the need is every bit as great in the summer, especially for families who depend on school breakfasts and lunch to feed their children.”

Donations

Donations of food are accepted every weekday between 8 am and 5 pm at the Food Bank, 200 Niantic Avenue, Providence. You can also donate online here.

The Food Bank’s most-needed items include tuna, canned and dried beans, brown rice, canned soups/stews, peanut butter, breakfast cereals, whole wheat pasta, and canned fruits and vegetables.
