J&W Culinary Archives & Museum Collecting RI African American Food Artifacts

The Culinary Archives and Museum at Johnson & Wales University needs Rhode Island's help for an upcoming exhibit with local roots.

Organizers of a new exhibit documenting Black food ways in Rhode Island, from slavery to the present, seek memorabilia and ephemera related to African American food and culture.

Menus, matchbooks, & more

"We are looking for menus, signs, cookware, matchboooks, advertising, recipes, cookbooks, photos, stories, and more," said Ray Rickman, the project's director. Rickman added that potential donors could be private collectors, families, churches, businesses, organizations or institutions. Items can be donated or loaned, he said.

The Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales leads the nation in collections related to food and restaurant life, both locally and internationally. It's open to the public Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm, at 315 Harborside Blvd in Providence.
