Brown Launches 'Brain Power' Series With Concussion Lecture

The athlete's greatest fear, the concussion, will the focus of the first 'Brain Power' lectures from Brown University.
The mysteries of the brain will be the focus of "Brain Power," the new, free quarterly lecture series at Brown University, and on October 24th the focus will be every athlete's fear: the concussion.

“Brain Power is an exciting educational program designed to inform our community about the diseases that affect our brain and nerves in our bodies,” said Dr. Michelle Mellion,assistant professor of neurology in the Alpert Medical School and a physician at Rhode Island Hospital. “People who attend will have the chance to interact with experts in the field and learn about cutting-edge treatments and research.”

Mellion is one of four Lifespan doctors and Brown medical professors who will speak on the Oct. 24 panel titled, “Diagnosed with a Concussion, Now What?” The panel, which begins at 6 p.m., also includes Dr. Neha Rauker, assistant professor of emergency medicine; Dr. Curt LaFrance, assistant professor of psychiatry (research); and Dr. Albert Telfeian, clinical assistant professor of neurosurgery.

Future subjects

The Brain Power series, sponsored by the Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute, will continue with future panels and lectures on personal health subjects including memory disorders, seizures and seizure-like disorders, and conditions affecting the peripheral nervous system, Mellion said.

Mellion said her goal with the Brain Power series is to provide an educational resource for the general public about neurological disorders that will be easily accessible, both in person and on the Web, via archived webinars.

The panel discussion on concussions Oct. 24 will be held at the Alpert Medical School education building at 222 Richmond Street, Providence. The lecture is free and open to the public.
