CVS Caremark Changes Name to CVS Health, Halts Tobacco Sales Ahead of Target Date

CVS Caremark Corporation has announced it has changed its corporate name to CVS Health  -- as well as the end of tobacco sales at CVS/pharmacy as of September 3, nearly a month ahead of the previously targeted date of October 1.

In a release sent Wednesday, CVS said the name change "reflects its broader health care commitment and its expertise in driving the innovations needed to shape the future of health."

“For our patients and customers, health is everything and CVS Health is changing the way health care is delivered to increase access, lower costs and improve quality,” announced Larry J. Merlo, President and CEO, CVS Health.  “As a pharmacy innovation company at the forefront of a changing health care landscape, we are delivering breakthrough products and services, from advising on prescriptions to helping manage chronic and specialty conditions.”

CVS announced in February 2014 that it would end the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products at its CVS/pharmacy stores, making CVS/pharmacy the first and only national pharmacy chain to take this step in support of the health and well-being of its patients and customers.

“Along with the start of CVS Health, the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products at CVS/pharmacy ends today. By eliminating cigarettes and tobacco products from sale in our stores, we can make a difference in the health of all Americans,” Merlo declared.

In addition to removing cigarettes and tobacco products for sale, CVS Health kicked off a comprehensive and uniquely personalized smoking cessation campaign to help millions of Americans to quit smoking.

Tobacco Free Rhode Island Applauds Move

Tobacco Free Rhode Island, a statewide network of over 55 organizations working to reduce tobacco use, lauded the announcement by CVS.

“Today CVS is saying 'So long, cigarettes! Hello health!'" said  said Karina Holyoak Wood, director, Tobacco Free Rhode Island, and public policy director for the American Lung Association in Rhode Island.

"Tobacco Free Rhode Island is thrilled that CVS is replacing tobacco products with smoking cessation products and counseling, right in their stores. It's a major milestone in retail that sets a new standard for health. We are so proud that a Rhode Island-based company is leading the way for the nation's health," said Wood.  “This decision makes good sense, because pharmacies are where people go for medicine and health care advice. It is illogical and counter-productive to health that pharmacies also sell cigarettes — items that, when used exactly as directed, kill more than 400,000 Americans every year."

Wood continued, "We urge all pharmacies and retailers to follow CVS' lead and move away from Big Tobacco and towards Big Health."
