RI's Most Popular Plastic Surgeries

Nationwide, plastic surgery surged in 2010, apparently unaffected by the recession. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, procedures increased about 10% since the previous year. In total, there were 9.3 million procedures last year, which cost patients close to $11 billion.  91% of those procedures were on women, but men's procedures have experienced an 88% increase since 1997.  What are the six most popular plastic surgery procedures in Rhode Island?

Though numbers are increasing nationwide, in Rhode Island, Dr. Tom Walek explains, “it is very different.” Walek, a plastic surgeon at Miriam Hospital, says that fewer people have the discretionary income for cosmetic surgery.  This means that there are fewer in office operatories and the procedures are more conservative.  Most plastic surgeons are associated with a hospital, which he explains in not a very workable business model.  “Plastic surgeons like myself are a dying breed.”
